Ventanas al mundo de la ciencia: preparación y oportunidad

La ciencia, la tecnología y la democracia pueden interrelacionarse y apoyarse mutuamente, con resultados beneficiosos para la sociedad en su conjunto, si los ciudadanos son adecuadamente educados y como adultos tienen acceso al mundo científico. El impacto de la ciencia para el mejoramiento de la vida humana depende en gran medida de la comprensión que el público posea de ella. Los países que aspiran a ser tanto científicos como democráticos deben brindar a sus ciudadanos las oportunidades para desarrollar una alfabetización científica en un contexto humanístico. A tal fin, los métodos y materiales pedagógicos para la enseñanza de ciencias deberían poner más énfasis en las dimensiones humanísticas de la actividad científica; al mismo tiempo, se deberían idear mecanismos que posibiliten a la ciencia aumentar su presencia en los medios masivos e Internet. Apuntando en un sentido similar, se podrían fortalecer los vínculos entre el mundo de la ciencia y el de la cultura mediante la creación o adecuación de centros de ciencias que involucren la actividad de artistas e historiadores, y el incentivo para que museos de arte y de historia involucren a más científicos.

Science, technology and democracy can be dependant one on another and mutually support, with beneficial results for society as a joint, if citizens receive an appropriate science education and they have access as adults to the world of science. The impact of science for improving human life depends, in the long run, of the understanding that the public has of it. Countries that aspire to be both scientific and democratic must give their citizens the opportunities to develop scientific literacy in a humanistic context. With this aim, pedagogic methods and materials for teaching sciences should emphasize the humanistic dimensions of the scientific enterprise; at the same time, there should be mechanisms to make possible that science increase its presence at the mass media and internet. With a similar aim, the links between the world of science and the world of culture could be strengthen by creating or reshaping science centers that involve the activity of artists and historians, and by encouraging art and history museums to involve more scientists.
